England shares borders with Scotland to the north and Wales to the southwest. The Irish Sea lies to the northwest and the Celtic Sea to the southwest. It also includes over 100 smaller islands such as Isles of Scilly and Isle of Wright. England is also divided into 48 counties, which is further divided into a single or several districts. Most of the counties were established in the Middle Ages between 7th to 11th centuries and 39 of them are classified as historic.
