Westminster Abbey

Westminster Abbey is a Gothic-style abbey church and is one of the country’s most notable religious sites and traditional place of coronations and weddings, as well as the burial site for English and British monarchs. It was founded in 960, rebuilt in 1517 and refurbished with additional towers sometime during the 18th century. Between 1540 and 1556, Westminster Abbey had a status of a cathedral. However, since 1560, it no longer has a status of a cathedral nor an abbey, but a status as Church of England “Royal Peculiar” where the sovereign is the head of the church. Coronations have taken place since both King Harold and William the Conqueror in 1066. Among the royal weddings that have taken place include: Princess Elizabeth (now Queen Elizabeth II) to the Duke of Edinburgh and Prince William, Duke of Cambridge to Catherine Middleton.
