Founded in 1788, Sydney is New South Wales’ capital and most populous city in the country. Located on the southeast shore coast, this city has been inhabited by indigenous Australians for 30,000 years before it was established as a penal colony by the first British settlers led by Captain Arthur Phillip. Convict transportation ended in mid 19th century and it has transformed itself into a major international economic and cultural centre.
