Plaza de Armas
Orginally known as Plaza de Iglesia, Plaza de Armas is the city’s oldest square built in the early 1520s. Many of the buildings around this square date back to the 1700s. The white marble statue in the middle of the square is of Carlos Manuel de Cespedes, the man who led the country to independence in 1868. This statue was erected in 1955 to replace the statue of an unpopular Spanish King, Ferdinand VII. Today, you can also find many restaurants and cafes in the surrounding area.
