Castillo de la Real Fuerza
Castillo de la Real Fuerza was built in 1577 as a fortification against pirates. However, the fort was not close enough to the harbour and therefore was turned into a residence for the Governor of Havana. Eventually, it was converted into a museum. The fort is believed to be the oldest stone fort in the Americas. In 1982, it was listed as part of UNESCO World Heritage site’s “Old Havana and its Fortifications.” Today, it serves as the city’s maritime museum, housing among others, an 18th century four-metre ship, the Santisima Trinidad.
