National Gallery and National Portrait Gallery
Located in Trafalgar Square, the National Gallery is an art museum that was founded in 1824. Today, it is home to a collection of over 2,300 paintings that date back to mid-13th century up to 1900. It is one of the most frequently visited art museums in the world, in ranks with Musee du Louvre, the British Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The building itself was built between 1832 and 1838 with a Neo-classical style architecture.
Adjacent to the National Gallery off Trafalgar Square and on St Martin’s Place is the National Portrait Gallery, which houses a collection of portraits of historically famous and important British people. Founded in 1856, it is the first portrait gallery in the world. It moved to its current site in 1896.
