Alto Douro Wine Region
This could be a perfect destination if you want to stay an extra day or two for wine tasting. Douro is a well-known wine region located 96km east of Porto centred on the Douro river, about a one-hour drive or train ride to Pinhao. Although the region is mainly linked to the Port wine production, Douro also produces table wine, ranging from Bordeaux to Burgundy. Archaeological evidence suggests that winemaking in this region started back during the 3rd and 4th centuries AD. The year 1675 was the earliest introduction to port wine, and by 1765 this region became the centre for its production
Among the top wine makers in the area include: Quinta de La Rosa, Quinta da Pacheca , and Quinta as Carvalhas. The Douro winemaking region was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2001.
