Gamla Stan, which means the old city, originated in the 13th century when Stockholm was founded and was the first island for the settlers. Stadsholmen is the main island, but officially it includes the Riddarholmen, Helgeandsholmen and Stromsborg islets. This beautiful and quaint town consists of medieval alleyways, cobbled streets and archaic architecture with North German influence. This area is full of restaurants, cafes bars and shops, where the centre is in Stortorget square.
