Abisko National Park

About 95 km northwest of Kiruna and towards the border with Norway, is Abisko National Park. Established in 1909 with an area of 77 km2, this park was created to preserve an area within Lapland in its natural and original condition, as well as for tourist attraction. This land is also used for biological, environmental, climate, geological and ecological research. During the winter this park is used for cross-country skiing, along with viewing the northern lights (aurora borealis) and in the summer for all-day hiking.

The inhabitants of this park include several bird species, marten, stoat, squirrels, moose, reindeer, as well as wolverines, arctic foxes, lynx and bears.
