Fisherman’s Wharf

This is one of the most popular tourist attractions in San Francisco. It acquired its name and neighbourhood characteristics from the city’s early days around the mid 1800s when immigrant fishermen from Italy settled in to take advantage of the high rise in population due to the gold rush. From then on, it remains the home base of San Francisco’s fishing fleet even when it started to become more and more popular as a tourist attraction in the 1970s. Fisherman’s Wharf is situated in the northern waterfront area of city and is also accessible by the F-line streetcar as well as the cable car.

One of the most busiest area is Pier 39, where you can find the Ripley’sBelieve It Or Not Museum, Ghirardelli Square, Cannery Shopping Centre and plenty of seafood restaurants serving very fresh clam chowder in sourdough bread bowl, dungeness crab, and many others. Fisherman’s Wharf is also the centre for boat cruises and tours. For example: in Pier 43, there is a 1-hour San Francisco Bay Cruise that sails around the bay area, passing by Golden Gate Bridge, Angel Island, and Alcatraz. The Alcatraz tour is accessible only by Alcatraz cruises and they depart from Pier 33 on the Embarcadero. These cruises are very popular, so you need to book them months in advance.
