Three-colour Lake Kelimutu
If you would rather stay in Flores an extra day or two instead of lying on a beach in Lombok or Gili Trawangan, I suggest you take the Garuda Indonesia 30-minute flight from Labuan Bajo to Ende, the capital of East Nusa Tenggara located in central Flores. Here you can see the three-colour Lake Kelimutu. Kelimutu is a volcano that is more than 1,000 meters high and situated near a small town called Moni. The volcano is about 50 km to the east of Ende: it is a 3-hour drive from Ende to Moni, and an additional 45-minute vehicle park from Moni to the volcano.
The volcano has three cater lakes with different colours and from time to time they change their colours. This is due to the change in chemical reactions resulting from the minerals contained in the lakes which perhaps is triggered by volcano gas activity. This volcano is very interesting to geologists not only because of the three different colours, but also because they are at the crest of one volcano. Visitors normally stay overnight in Moni to catch the sunrise at Kelimutu.
